Siding does two jobs: it is the first thing anyone sees, and it is what keeps water out of your wall cavity. The second job is the expensive one when it fails, because rot inside a wall stays invisible until it is structural.
Cold Makes Vinyl Brittle, and That Changes Everything
Vinyl siding becomes progressively more brittle as temperature drops. In a Medina County January, siding that would flex and absorb an impact in July will crack instead.
Two consequences follow. Winter hail does considerably more damage to vinyl here than summer hail of the same size — and northeast Ohio does get winter hail. And ordinary winter impacts that would leave no mark in summer, a ladder knock or a stone from a mower, will crack a panel.
It is also why repairs in deep cold need care. Removing and refitting a panel at fifteen degrees frequently cracks its neighbours, so genuinely cold-weather siding work sometimes means waiting rather than forcing it.
Nobody Checks Siding After Hail
Everyone inspects the roof. Almost nobody inspects the siding, and hail routinely damages both — especially on the north and west elevations that face most Ohio storms.
On vinyl, hail cracks and punches rather than denting. The cracks are often hairline, easy to walk straight past, and each one is a path for water into the wall. On aluminium it dents visibly.
Either way it is claimable damage, and if your roof claim is approved for a storm that also cracked your siding, both belong in the same claim. Filing the roof and discovering the siding a year later means a separate claim, a separate deductible, and an argument about which storm caused it.

The Colour Matching Problem
Repairing isolated damage on otherwise sound siding is straightforward except for one thing: matching.
Vinyl colour lines get discontinued regularly, and existing siding fades with UV exposure over years. So even a technically correct match against the original colour code can look visibly wrong next to twenty-year-old panels.
Where matching genuinely cannot be achieved, many policies contain provisions requiring a reasonably uniform appearance — which can mean the carrier pays for a full elevation, or occasionally the whole house, rather than a patch. Documenting that the original product is unavailable is what makes that argument, and it is worth making properly.

- Vinyl — the practical default. Thicker modern grades hold up considerably better in cold than the budget product.
- Insulated vinyl — foam-backed. Adds R-value, which is worth more in Medina County than in most of the country, and it resists impact noticeably better than hollow vinyl.
- Fiber cement — James Hardie and similar. Does not go brittle in cold and stands up to hail far better than vinyl. Heavier and more labour-intensive to install.
- Board and batten — vertical siding for accents and modern farmhouse elevations.
