What a Bruise Actually Is

An asphalt shingle is a fibreglass mat saturated in asphalt with ceramic granules embedded on the surface. Those granules are the UV shield; exposed asphalt degrades fast in sunlight.

A hailstone with enough energy knocks granules loose and compresses the mat beneath. That is a bruise. Press it and it gives slightly, like a bruise on fruit. It does not crack the shingle, does not tear it, and does not leak.

What it does is expose bare asphalt to the sun. That spot then ages at a dramatically accelerated rate compared with the rest of the roof, eventually cracks, and starts letting water through — typically eighteen months to three years after the storm, well outside most claim windows.

Smaller Hail Than You Think

The common assumption is that it takes golf-ball hail to damage a roof. It does not.

One-inch hail, roughly a quarter, can bruise an asphalt roof — particularly one past ten years old where the mat has lost flexibility. Wind driving the hail sideways matters as much as diameter, which is why the same storm can leave one side of a Wadsworth street untouched and damage the other.

Roof age is the other variable. A three-year-old roof absorbs impact that will bruise a fifteen-year-old roof, because the asphalt is still pliable.

Test Squares Decide the Claim

This is the mechanism most homeowners never hear about, and it is where claims are won and lost.

An adjuster marks out a ten-by-ten-foot square on a slope and counts the hail strikes inside it. Carriers apply a threshold — a number of strikes within that square — to decide whether the slope warrants replacement or merely repair. Thresholds vary by carrier and adjusters apply some discretion.

The consequence is that which slope gets tested changes the outcome. If the adjuster tests the convenient south slope and it falls just under threshold, while the north and west slopes that faced the storm were never tested, the claim gets scoped as a repair on a roof that needed replacing.

That is why we are on the roof during the adjuster inspection. Not to argue — to make sure the slopes that took the storm are the slopes that get counted.

Hail Damages More Than the Roof

Roof claims get filed. The rest gets forgotten, and it is usually claimable under the same event.

  • Siding — vinyl cracks rather than dents, often in hairline fractures easy to miss from ground level
  • Gutters and downspouts — dent visibly, and corroborate the roof damage
  • Fascia and soffit wraps — aluminium dents the same way
  • Window screens and wraps — torn or bent
  • Air conditioning condenser fins — flattened fins reduce efficiency and are commonly covered
  • Decks, fences and outbuildings — often included under other structures coverage

Hail Damage Repair Questions in Wadsworth

Almost never from the ground. Check the gutters and downspouts for dents instead — that is the best available proxy. If the soft metals took a hit, the roof did too.

Yes. Newer shingles resist better because the asphalt is still flexible, but sufficient hail damages new roofs readily.

Hail is generally treated as a weather event rather than a fault-based claim. Regional rate adjustments after major storms affect everyone in the area whether they filed or not. Your carrier can answer specifically for your policy.

No. It is one of the most common denial reasons and it is frequently reversed with better documentation and a reinspection.
