Why Registration Is Not Just Paperwork
An unregistered warranty is considerably harder to claim on. Years later, when a problem appears, the burden falls on you to prove what was installed, when, and by whom. A registered warranty already has all of that on file with GAF.
It also matters when you sell. Several GAF warranties are transferable to the next owner, which is a genuine selling point — but only if the warranty was registered in the first place.
What the 50-Year Lifetime Warranty Covers
GAF’s lifetime warranties cover manufacturing defects in the shingles for as long as you own the home, with a non-prorated period at the start during which coverage is at its strongest.
What a standard material warranty does not cover is installation. If the nails went in above the nailing zone, the flashing was reused, or the ventilation was wrong, the shingles are not defective — the workmanship is. That is how the overwhelming majority of roofs actually fail.
The Warranty Only Master Elite Contractors Can Write

That distinction matters more than it sounds. If a contractor goes out of business, a workmanship warranty written by that contractor is worth nothing. One written by GAF is not.
