Collin Chambers of Tartan Builders approached me about a roof inspection. After the inspection he filed a claim with my insurance company for a new roof. The insurance company made an appointment for their contracted representative to do their own inspection. The inspection company cancelled and set a new date and time for another inspection. The inspector arrived more than one hour early. I called Collin and he came right over, just as the inspector was finishing. It started to snow, so Collin did not get a chance to show the inspector the damage. As a result, the insurance company declined the claim for reasons unrelated to the missing and damaged shingles. Collin filed an appeal that the insurance company ignored. Collin then filed a new claim with the insurance company that then sent out one of its own representatives. As a precaution Collin arrived early and showed the representative the damage. The insurance company then approved the claim for a roof replacement within a week. Collin deserves a lot of credit for his dedication to this entire process from start to final approval. He could have stopped after the first denial, but he stayed with it.
The roof replacement went very well. The installation team ran out of daylight on Friday and came back on Saturday morning to finish. I was amazed at the amount of work they did on Friday. On Friday they netted the whole house, tore off the old roof shingles, moisture barrier and drip edge, removed all the vents, replaced the wood where the vents were, replaced a few other boards where there was some rot, laid the felt, leak barrier, starter strips, ridge vents, and ridge caps over the entire house. The crew managed to install the shingles over the main part of the house and garage. They worked until about 8:30 PM, but after dark it was mostly cleanup. On Saturday they finished installing the shingles, ridge vent, and ridge caps on the back patio roof, and removed and replaced the shingles over the fireplace that juts out from the pack of the house. They also spent about two hours finishing cleanup and using their magnets to pick up nails and screws. They installed about 35 squares of shingles, 350 feet of drip edge, 80 feet of ridge vent, and 65 feet of ridge caps, all on a steep roof. I believe that the crew could have finished in one day if the late October days were longer.
Overall, a job well done. The new roof looks great.
