Gutter Sizing: Why 5-Inch Gutters Overflow on Some Houses

Overview

A Gutter Is a Conveyor, Not a Tank

Gutters do not store water. They collect it and move it to a downspout, and the downspout takes it away. That means a gutter system has two capacity limits: how much the trough can carry along its length, and how fast the downspouts can drain it.

When people upsize the trough and leave the downspouts alone, the overflow often continues. The downspout is usually the actual constraint.

What Determines the Right Size

1. Drainage area

The roof area feeding each gutter run. A long run collecting a large plane needs more capacity than a short run under a small dormer. This is measured as the horizontal projected area, not the sloped surface.

2. Roof pitch

Steeper roofs deliver water to the gutter faster and with more momentum. A steep plane both increases the effective load and makes water more likely to overshoot the gutter entirely. Sizing methods apply a multiplier for pitch for exactly this reason.

3. Rainfall intensity

Sizing is based on a peak intensity figure rather than annual totals, because gutters fail in the heaviest ten minutes, not over a season. Central Ohio sees genuinely intense summer downpours, and a system sized for average rain will overflow several times a year.

What that means in practice

  • Five-inch K-style is the residential default and is adequate for many houses with modest roof areas, moderate pitch, and enough downspouts.
  • Six-inch K-style carries substantially more water — the increase is considerably more than the twenty per cent the number suggests, because cross-sectional area grows faster than width. It is the right call for large roof planes, steep pitches, long runs, and homes where multiple roof levels drain into one gutter.
  • Downspouts matter as much as the trough. The common upgrade from a 2x3 inch downspout to 3x4 inch roughly doubles the outlet capacity. On a six-inch gutter, 3x4 downspouts should be the default rather than an upgrade.
  • Downspout spacing is the other half. One outlet on a long run means water has to travel a long way before it can leave, and it will spill over the low point before it gets there. Adding outlets is often cheaper and more effective than upsizing the gutter.

Diagnosis

Telling Undersized From Blocked

Watch the gutters during a genuinely heavy rain, which is the only time this is diagnosable. Overflow that happens along the whole length of a clean run, in heavy rain only, is a capacity problem. Overflow at one point, or in ordinary rain, or water sitting in the trough after the rain stops, points to a blockage or a pitch problem instead.

Also look at where the water is going over. Water shooting straight over the front lip on a steep roof suggests the gutter is set too low or too far out to catch the discharge, which is a hanging problem rather than a sizing one. And water running behind the gutter and down the fascia usually means a missing or badly installed drip edge.

Consequences

Why Overflow Is Not Cosmetic

Water that misses the gutter lands at the foundation. Over time that saturates the soil against the wall, which is the leading cause of wet basements in central Ohio, and it undermines walkways and patios. It also splashes back onto the lowest courses of siding, which is why a stripe of deterioration frequently appears exactly under a chronic overflow point.

Overflow behind the gutter is worse, because it runs directly onto the fascia and into the soffit. That is how a capacity problem turns into a rot problem, and then into a gutter that pulls away because the fascia will no longer hold fasteners.
