Attic Ventilation: The Cheapest Thing That Decides How Long Your Roof Lasts
It is invisible, it is inexpensive at installation time, and it does more to determine roof life than the brand on the wrapper. It is also the single most commonly neglected part of a roof.

What Ventilation Is Actually Doing
A ventilated attic moves outside air in low at the soffits and out high at the ridge, continuously. In summer that carries away heat that would otherwise build under the deck and bake the shingles from behind. In winter it carries away moisture that rises from the living space, and it keeps the roof deck close to outside temperature.
That second job is why ventilation and ice dams are the same subject. A cold deck means snow melts from sunlight rather than from heat leaking out of the house, which is what stops meltwater refreezing at the eaves.
Balance, and the Numbers Behind It
Ohio's residential code sets a baseline of net free ventilating area not less than 1/150 of the area of the space being ventilated, with a reduction to 1/300 permitted where specified conditions are met — commonly a balanced arrangement with upper vents positioned well above the eave vents, or an appropriate vapour retarder. Adoption and amendments vary by jurisdiction, so confirm the specifics with your local building department.
Net free area is not the size of the hole
A vent's net free ventilating area is the actual open area after the louvres, screens, and baffles are accounted for, and it is published by the manufacturer. A twelve-inch vent does not deliver twelve inches of net free area. Calculations that use gross opening size overstate ventilation substantially.
Balance is the part that gets missed
Intake and exhaust need to be roughly matched, with the intake low and the exhaust high. Exhaust without adequate intake does not create airflow; it creates suction that pulls conditioned air out of the house through ceiling penetrations. Roughly even split between intake and exhaust is the usual target unless the manufacturer specifies otherwise.
Do not mix exhaust types
Ridge vent plus powered fans plus gable vents on the same attic can short-circuit each other, with one exhaust pulling air from another instead of from the soffits. Pick a system and let it work.
Keep the airway open
Code calls for a clear airspace of at least an inch between insulation and the roof sheathing. Insulation blown over the soffits blocks intake entirely, which is extremely common and is fixed with baffles.

What a Ventilation Problem Looks Like
From inside, in winter: frost or damp on the underside of the deck, rusty nail points, musty smells, damp or compressed insulation, and mould on the sheathing. From inside, in summer: an attic that is dramatically hotter than outside air rather than moderately so.
From outside: ice dams at the eaves, shingles curling or blistering ahead of their age, and one slope visibly further along than another. In the house: upstairs rooms that will not cool, and unusually high summer cooling bills.
What Correction Involves
The order matters. First establish intake, because everything depends on it — that usually means clearing blocked soffit vents, adding vented soffit panels where there are none, and installing baffles to keep insulation out of the airway.
Then set exhaust. Continuous ridge vent is generally the most effective on a roof with adequate ridge length, and the natural time to install it is during a replacement, since it requires cutting the deck at the ridge. Roofs with short or broken ridges may need a different approach.
Then seal and insulate. Air leaks at recessed lights, bath fans, and top plates push warm moist air into the attic, and no amount of ventilation fully compensates for a leaky ceiling. Bath and kitchen fans must terminate outside, not into the attic — venting them into the attic is a surprisingly common and genuinely damaging shortcut.
